Interesting Fact

A New Epidemic - We do not need to look far these days to hear another story about the epidemic of obesity in this country. Newspaper headlines, magazine covers, news programs and even television shows are now documenting the fact that our country is getting fatter and unhealthier. Moreover, obesity is a disease that has reached far beyond the United States, with one healthcare expert coining the phrase “Globesity.”

It is therefore no coincidence that the prevalence of obesity is also on the rise in our children. In fact, obesity is considered one of the most dangerous problems facing children today!  The American Heart Association states that 17 - 25% of kids 6 - 11 are obese. The Cleveland Clinic supports this estimation stating that 1 out of 5 Americans age 6 - 11 are obese.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the measurement used to define obesity. In adults, a BMI between 25 and 29 is overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher is obese. In children, the normal range of BMI changes with age and gender. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines a child whose BMI is between the 85th and 95th percentile for age (meaning that 85% - 95% of his or her peers have equal or lower BMI) as being “at risk” for obesity. A child who has a BMI at or above the 95th percentile is considered obese.

Currently in the United States, thirty percent of children ages 6 - 19 have a BMI at or greater than the 95th percentile. This is double the number that existed 20 years ago. At The GYMM Zone we find these statistics unacceptable!!  In order to help stem the tide of morbidity and mortality seen in obese adults in our country, The GYMM Zone is bound and determined to focus on and change the habits of our children and set the stage for an ongoing healthy lifestyle.
